WAVE Water Warriors

Take the Pledge and Become a Water Warrior

Time to Break Up with Plastic

We’ve all heard of (and maybe even had) toxic relationships with other people, but one of the most toxic relationships humans have is with PLASTIC.

Plastic surrounds every facet of our lives: grocery bags, water bottles, pill containers, sandwich bags, toothbrushes, shampoo bottles, and the list goes on.

It’s time to BREAK UP with the plastic in your life by taking WAVE’s Water Warrior Pledge and learning about the ways plastic effects our lives and how to reduce your plastic consumption.

Check back each month for more information on sustainable practices to help you be a WAVE Water Warrior.

Overfishing

People around the world rely on the fishing industry for food, jobs and economic stability. However, a large problem has emerged from this industry: overfishing.

Overfishing is ultimately the practice of catching more fish and seafood than is needed.

Some harmful effects of this are dwindling fish populations and bycatch. Bycatch is when unintended fish get caught up in fishing gear, such as dolphins, whales or sea turtles. Overfishing specific populations of fish can cause a chain reaction in the ecosystem, affecting the predators that rely on those species for food, or the coral reefs that rely on them for protection.

Take Action!

Managing overfishing is difficult, but if you love eating seafood, you can still make a difference! By switching to eating from sustainable sources, it tells big corporations that consumers care about sustainable practices, prompting a shift towards sustainability.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is a great partner in educating people on sustainable seafood brands with their Seafood Watch and Sustainable Seafood Guide. By only purchasing seafood from businesses who practice sustainable fishing, you can help fish populations and ecosystems all over the globe!

Want to do even more? A great start to protecting the Ohio River is to join WAVE Foundation for our 15th Annual River Sweep on Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. to help clean up litter along the banks of the Ohio River.
